Offered for sale is the highly sought-after 1996 Canada $2 Piedfort Proof Silver Coin and BRX Banknote Set, a special edition release from the Royal Canadian Mint commemorating the introduction of Canada’s first bi-metallic $2 coin, the iconic “Toonie.” This historic set marked the Mint’s first-ever Piedfort issue and remains a favourite among Canadian coin and banknote collectors.

The centrepiece of the set is a stunning 1996 Proof Silver Piedfort $2 Coin, struck on an unusually thick planchet, making it heavier than a standard circulation coin. The reverse features Brent Townsend’s celebrated polar bear design, while the obverse bears the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Dora de Pedery-Hunt. Piedfort coins trace their origins to medieval Europe and were traditionally produced as presentation pieces.

Also included are two uncut BRX-prefix $2 replacement banknotes, among the last Canadian $2 notes ever printed before the denomination was replaced by the Toonie in 1996. The BRX prefix identifies these notes as replacement notes, produced in limited quantities and highly desirable to collectors.
